Tibetan Singing Bowls

Engineer: Michael Dunn (view profile)

Description:

Multisampled 32bit Instrument for Kontakt - authentically played with long loops, latched instruments and assorted hits.

Singing Bowls are traditionally played by running a wooden beater around the rim of the bowls, similar to running your finger around the top of a wineglass. These samples have been performed in this style. Notoriously hard to record, they produce a spiritual, resonant tone that is perfect for backgrounds, ambient/chill material and meditation. With nearly 250MB of long, gently fluctuating 32bit loops and hits mapped across a full 88 note keyboard range, this instrument almost plays itself - check out the demo which was performed live in one take.

Using Kontakt's extensive range of editing parameters, power-users can attain a wide variety of different effects. To ensure you hear all the lowest tones of the bowls please ensure you are monitoring through good-sized speakers :)

Building this instrument was truly a labour of love...
(Compatible with Kontakt version 2.2.3.003 and above..)

To install simply copy the instrument "Tibetan Singing Bowls.nki" to a folder of your choice, then open in Kontakt. The file "singing bowls.tga" is for the skin of the instrument. Copy it to a folder (preferably to the Kontakt wallpaper folder - Kontakt/Presets/wallpaper) - when you first open the instrument it will ask where "singing bowls.tga" is located - point it to the wallpaper folder and Kontakt will load the file. Alternatively, locate the file using the skin bitmap chooser in Kontakt - (instrument options/instrument/skin bitmap).

These samples have been played by running a wooden beater around the rim of the bowls...similar to rubbing your finger around the top of a wineglass, though more intense and varying in tone. From C0 to B1 the notes are latched to play on their own - play once for on and once for off. If you forget which notes you have pressed and you can't switch the bowls off just press 'Panic' on the front control panel. At the top end of the keyboard are various hits using the beaters on the bowls... enjoy !
